BIHMI Launches the First Fertility Clinic in Davao City

Fertility Care Center Davao Inc.

With remarkable modernization and improvement of services and facilities, BIHMI, once again takes the lead in yet another innovative undertaking, as it launched the first fertility center in Davao City.

FCCDI or Fertility Care Center Davao, Inc. was organized by BIHMI’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology which is chaired by Dr. Darlene S. Estuart.

The inauguration and dedication ceremony of Fertility Care Center – Davao, which is located at the lower ground level of BIHMI, was held last March 8, 2007. Dr. Maria Lourdes Z. Cabling, the newly installed Laboratory Director, gave an informative presentation of FCCD services and its relevance to fertility care. A spirited panel discussion on the latest trends in fertility care followed, with Dr. Veronica M. Deniega, FCCD Center Director, Dr. Cabling, and Dr. Maria Concepcion Ilao-Oreta, as resource persons.

Councilors Arnulfo Cabling, Rene Elias Lopez and Angela Librado– Trinidad, along with other prominent public servants and medical practitioners expressed support as they took part in the said affair.

BIHMI stays true to its commitment to help address the health needs of the people holistically in the most accessible, acceptable, and affordable manner. Making fertility care services available to hopeful couples by providing a comfortable and safe venue to learn about current therapies and options for the treatment of reproductive health problems from fertility specialists and enabling couples to optimize possibilities by getting the best out of the latest technology.

Diagnostic and Operative Laparoscopy and Hysteroscopy at BIHMI

Surgical procedures which in the past could only be done by opening and exposing relatively large areas of the body, are now possible with a minimum of 2-3 keyhole size incisions. BIHMI now offers patients a new option, minimally invasive surgery, with less trauma, less pain and less blood loss. In most cases, only a spoonful of blood is lost. Trained medical professionals are enabled to perform detailed examination of most structures inside the abdomen and perform surgeries using the newly acquired state-of-the-art Laparoscopic and Hysteroscopic machines at Brokenshire Memorial Hospital.

This new option is fast becoming the more popular option, as it allows faster recovery and better cosmetic result, or less scarring, with the reduced risk of infection and adhesion formation. Faster healing means a shorter hospital stay for patients and less time away from work as well, making it a wiser economic option. This technology covers most surgical specialties. It is now commonly used in the removal of the gall bladder and appendix. It also covers neurosurgery, ENT, thoracic surgery, general surgery, urology, and arthroscopy, among others.

Dr. Paula Cynthia Cruz, MD, FPOGS, of the GYNECOLOGIC ENDOSCOPY SECTION commends this technology stating, “In gynecology, actual and real time visualization of the pelvis through a monitor permits a thorough inspection of the female reproductive organs, thereby enabling doctors to treat problems like ovarian cysts, myoma, ectopic pregnancy, chronic pelvic pain endometriosis and infertility. Laparoscopy has become an indispensable aid in the evaluation and treatment of an infertile woman.”

Through Hysteroscopy, “visualization” of what is inside the uterus is possible. A tiny camera is inserted into the body thru a small 1-2 cm incision. It sends clear and accurate images to a television monitor depicting the on-going operation inside the body which is very crucial to the whole process. The machine utilizes a video system consisting of 3 highly sensitive CCD chips producing true color rendition and high light sensitivity for outstanding image luminosity.

This technology is truly an advantage for the recently launched fertility care facility at BIHMI, once again setting new trends in health care delivery in Davao City and the whole of Mindanao.
