TO ALL BIHMI FAMILY & FRIENDS
In commemoration for the incoming Centennial Anniversary Celebration, Brokenshire Integrated Health Ministries, Inc. is putting up a museum within its vicinity. In this connection, it would be appreciated if you could lend or donate pictures and other memorabilia (e.g. old uniforms, instruments, newsletters and the like) that would depict Brokenshire Memorial Hospital’s History. Rest assured that all pictures borrowed will be taken cared of and returned after scanning. Your contribution and effort will be vital in the success of the museum’s establishment.
Please contact or see any of the following for submission of artifacts and for more information please contact: Mrs. Naomi Romero – Centennial Museum Committee Chairperson or Ms. Nelia Desamparo – Artifacts Collection in-charge at the Laboratory and X-ray Unit respectively.
BIHMI CENTENNIAL COUNTDOWN
Exactly one hundred days before its Centenary (July 15, 2008) BIHMI senior and unit managers, previous and present Board of Trustees, friends and partners symbolically totaling to one hundred individuals marched from the UCCP Central Church in Legazpi to Magallanes (the previous site of the hospital) and back to the BIHMI slope where the rest of the BIHMI community was assembled for the launching of the 100 Day Countdown. The activity, entitled “Alay-Lakad sa Pagkakaisa at Pagmamahal Sa Serbisyo Para Sa Kalusugan Ng Sambayanang Filipino” began at exactly 5:45 A.M. The time of onset of the Alay-Lakad was in itself symbolic as the digits when multiplied to each other equal to 100.
Brokenshire Memorial Hospital was founded in 1908 by the American Board of Foreign Missions who saw and responded to the dire need of Davaoeños who were then plagued by malaria and malnutrition. The healing ministry, which started as a small clinic along the Davao riverbank (Magallanes) then grew into a 34-bed hospital known as Davao Mission Hospital.
Adding significance to the event was the presence of the Honorable Vice-Mayor Sara Duterte for the Ceremonial Turn-Over of the copy of the Sangguniang Panglusod’s Resolution of Support to the BIHMI Centennial Celebration. On the receiving end was BIHMI’s very own BOT Vice-Chairperson in the person of Vice-Mayor Moises Arendain. Impressive presentations from the Centennial choir and BIHMI dancers further immersed the guests in a very festive mood.
The program was highlighted by the symbolic release of 100 green and white balloons by 100 BIHMI workers and 3 special balloons by Dr. Jack Estuart, Engr. Edwin Juit, and Engr. Rhuel Desabilla to represent the three intertwined ministries of BIHMI: Brokenshire Memorial Hospital, Community Health & Development Program and the Resource and Training Program respectively.
The formal opening of the volleyball tournament followed shortly after the Launching of the 100 day countdown. BIHMI workers, clad in their respective team uniforms, cheered on as their teammates fought for first place.
It was a fun and memorable day indeed for BIHMI. To mark this important milestone in the BIHMI history, the Management alongside the Centennial Department has planned a number of events, beginning June 30 and culminating in a Grand Centennial Celebration on the 15th of July.
It is our fervent hope that you: our patrons, stakeholders, partners and friends, will join us in these celebrations as we reflect on our past and present accomplishments and look to our future growth and successes in our next 100 years.
Cleft Center in Mindanao
Last January 10, 2008 was a red-letter day for BIHMI as Operation Smile International (OSI) and its Asian region, national and local counterparts had a conference at the Emma Noreen Hall of Brokenshire Memorial Hospital. Also present in the said conference are BIHMI Administrative Council and officers of the Davao City Health Office, and UCCP Social Concerns and Foundation. The conference aimed to strengthen partnerships as well as provide an avenue for dialogue among these entities.
Operation Smile International (OSI), founded in 1982, is the leading international humanitarian organization dedicated to providing free reconstructive surgery to indigent children and young adults with cleft lips, cleft palates and other facial deformities. In the Philippines alone, volunteer Filipino and foreign surgeons of Operation Smile operated on more than 14,000 indigent Filipino children and young adults.
In a short but inspiring audio-visual presentation by its founder: Dr. William Magee, Jr., a prominent plastic surgeon in the United States, he said that a 45-minute surgery is all that it will take to put a smile back on the children’s faces.
The partnership of OSI and BIHMI has indeed endured time and tide. BIHMI has hosted several missions by Operation Smile from 1996-2002, and have operated on at least 1,500 individuals in that span of time. Last November 2007, the two entities have come into mutual agreement that Brokenshire Memorial Hospital will house the Cleft Center in Mindanao. The soft opening of the said facility is pegged in the first half of 2008.
It is an exciting tie-up for BIHMI and OSI as both institutions are celebrating significant milestones in the life of its ministries. BIHMI’s hundred years of healing ministry is complemented by OSI’s twenty-five years of inspiring, dynamic and fruitful service.
It is evident in the life and work of both BIHMI and OSI that partnerships are essential in ensuring sustainable and accessible healthcare for individuals, families, and communities as a whole.
NEW PACKAGE RATES FOR DIALYSIS
It is undeniable that there has been an increasing trend in the prevalence of kidney diseases especially End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). This contention is supported by reports from the Philippine Renal Disease Registry and from the Department of Health. Such alarming condition has also been cited in a recent article from Malaya which stated that each year it is estimated that more than 60,000 Filipinos with kidney problems reach the point of ESRD.
In our commitment to provide quality health care in the most accessible and affordable manner, BIHMI created a new Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) package for dialysis patients. These new package rates are as follows:
- Patient will pay P750.00 per session (up to 24 sessions) in a quarter (3 months) if with PhilHealth
- Patient will pay the ACTUAL charges after 24 sessions in a quarter
- Non-PhilHealth Patients will pay ACTUAL charges
- In-Patient’s Renal Dialysis sessions shall not be covered with PhilHealth and patients shall pay ACTUAL charges. All charges shall be incorporated on the In-Patient’s Bill.
